SanFrancisco Recycling Artist in Residence

Trash to Treasures
The Artist-in-Residence Program at SF Recycling & Disposal, Inc. is an innovative program that inspires and educates people about recycling and resource conservation by providing local artists with access to materials, a work space, and other resources at our Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center.

Since 1990, artists have worked in a large, well-equipped studio next to our Transfer Station west of Highway 101 near 3-COM Park in San Francisco. The Transfer Station is located within a 44 acre property that includes several recycling facilities and the Public Disposal Area (also known as “the dump”).

Art is created from what would have been sent with the rest of San Francisco’s trash to landfills across the Bay or recycling plants across the nation.

“Many artists find and recycle materials in their art, but no one else has this much material to pick from,” says Program Director Paul Fresina.

Hub Cap Creatures

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

art from recycled materialsWhile we’re on the subject of fish sculpture created from recycled materials …let me introduce Hub Cap Creatures. The artist states: Hubcap creatures are made entirely from re-cycled materials. All the hubcaps are found, usually on the side of the road, and therefore bear the scars of their previous lives in the form of scratches and abrasions. I believe these marks add texture and history to the creatures they decorate, and so choose not to fill, overpaint or alter them in any way.

The Junkman and his Junk Music

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

Several years ago, Donald Knaack made a commitment to exclusively compose-for and perform-on junk, objects that have been discarded and everyday household objects - all recycled for the purpose of music. The result is called Junk Music ™. “Junk Music ™ is made from junk, but it doesn’t sound like junk. When they hear it, most people think its some type of regular percussion that’s been electronically altered. But it’s 100% pure Vermont recycled materials. I believe it’s the most basic form of world music as it contains two elements that are common in most modern societies: an abundance of junk and music.” said Knaack.

The Junkman is the ultimate recycler and takes the concepts of recycling to new creative levels by choosing discarded objects that once had a specific function (such as an automobile brake drum) and giving those objects a new life as instruments of music. “Taking a discarded object, that once had a specific function, and transforming that object into a sound-producing object has both a great recycling message as well as fresh innovative sound from which I can create a new music. That to me is true creativity. It gives me the opportunity to continue to test my muse: tools that are no good require more skill” said Knaack.

Junk Music ™ has performed for a wide variety of audiences and with a wide variety of performers from PHISH to Twyla Tharp to Conan O’Brien to First Night Boston.
